The Patrick Henry High School Orchestra program has a proud tradition of excellence. The Chamber Orchestra performed at the Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage as part of the 2017 SHIFT Festival of American Orchestras. The Concert Orchestra received the highest score at the 2014 Worldstrides Festival of Gold. The group has performed in prestigious venues including Orchestra Hall in Chicago and Carnegie Hall. Patrick Henry was a 2015 Grammy Signature Schools Semifinalist.
Jeff Midkiff, Patrick Henry High School Orchestra Director, was selected to receive the Yale Distinguished Music Educator Award at the 2017 Symposium on Music in City Schools. Assistant Conductor David Lipps received the “Hall of Fame” award from the Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Association.
The Patrick Henry Orchestra program is comprised of three performing ensembles: the Chamber Orchestra, Concert Orchestra, and String Quartets. The Chamber Orchestra consistently earns Superior ratings at the Virginia Band and Orchestra District Assessments. The String Quartet has performed before Roanoke Symphony Orchestra concerts on several occasions. The Patrick Henry Orchestra membership is approximately100 students.
